Islander 71 will accommodate 323 people, with more than half of those seats situated outside. Eight TVs have been added to a 30-seat outdoor bar, and a yard facing Morgan Creek will be a place for the restaurant to host special events, such as oyster roasts and live musical acts. Islander 71 is open for dinner Tuesday through Sunday and lunch Friday through Sunday. Patrons can expect a flow of live musicians to roll through the restaurant's outdoor stage along with several charitable events, like an upcoming evening benefiting the Warrior Surf Foundation. Islander 71’s interior feels like a classic boathouse with wood paneling, vintage decor, and panoramic views of the water. The open floor plan has a variety of seating, including numerous tables, booths, and a cozy bar area. Having a tough time keeping up with all the new dining options?
Taking you back to when kids rode bikes freely, Dads drank beer on the beach and Moms sunbathed to a golden brown. Afternoons were spent crabbing on the dock, or catching Reds at flood tide. Dinner was a gathering time for friends and family to share succulent seafood and fruity drinks. Laughter and good vibes were in the air as the sky turned into a mango sunset. Hushpuppies, seared tuna, fry platters, filet mignon, and ceviche are just a small selection from Islander 71’s Southern seafood-centric menu.

After receiving three proposals on the property, the city agreed to lease the restaurant space to Isle of Palms residents Dave and Chrissy Lorenz and Jon Bushnell. To prepare the restaurant for opening, the Lorenzes and Bushnell gutted the building and installed new HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems. They also changed the restaurant’s layout, making way for more waterfront views. Dave Lorenz, who operates Mex 1 locations in West Ashley, Mount Pleasant and Sullivan’s Island, describes Islander 71 as a classic fish house. The name is a nod to the 1970s, when growth on the island skyrocketed.

Islander 71’s menu has not yet been finalized, but future guests can expect an approachable offering with an emphasis on affordable, locally sourced seafood.
After receiving three proposals on the property, the city agreed to lease the restaurant space to Bushnell and the Lorenzes. The trio’s bid beat out a proposal by the Los Angeles-based group that owns nearby Wild Dunes Resort. Patrons who visit the new waterfront restaurant will notice a photo of a man named George “Sugar” Hill whose family was one of the first to live on the island, according to Dave Lorenz. It’s currently the only circa-1970s photo in the restaurant, but Lorenz is inviting those who visit Islander 71 to bring in their own vintage Isle of Palms beach photos to be displayed on an empty brick wall in the restaurant.
There’s also a kids menu, with options like mac and cheese and buttered pasta. On the beverage side, there’s everything from “Boat Drinks” to wine by the glass to cold beer (including four options on draft). The exterior at Islander 71 is easily one of the most spacious options in the Charleston area. There’s a large turf area with corn hole and an outdoor stage, multiple bars and decks, and plenty of places to catch sunset.
This laidback restaurant and bar is a nod to the easy-going beach life of IOP in the 1970’s. Islander 71 offers Southern cuisine with an emphasis on seafood, boat drinks, and cold beer. Beautiful location on the water, attentive service, but food quality a bit lacking. Flounder sandwich just ok, not seasoned, burger very good, but fries on all four platters generous but just warm and soggy.
